It seems appropriate to celebrate it this year, the 400th anniversary of the death of the man who compiled it almost single-handedly, and in the process helped to lay the foundations of a moderately-sized island nation’s rather disproportional global influence and presence in the furthest corners of the world. In years that followed, The Principal Navigations would become, in many ways, a cornerstone of Britain’s imperial ambitions, but it also serves as a unique record of figures and voices, of lives and experiences like that of Samson Rowlie, that could so easily otherwise have been lost. Harborne’s letter to the English renegade working behind the scenes of Ottoman government comes to us within the pages of what is perhaps the greatest collection of travel writing ever to be put together in any language, with a title as sonorous as the ambition behind it: The Principall Navigations, Voiages, and Discoveries of the English Nation: Made by Sea or Over Land to the Most Remote and Farthest Distant Quarters of the Earth at Any Time within the Compasse of These 1500 Years: Divided into Three Several Parts According to the Positions of the Regions Whereunto They Were Directed the First Containing the Personall Travels of the English unto Indæa, Syria, Arabia … the Second, Comprehending the Worthy Discoveries of the English Towards the North and Northeast by Sea, as of Lapland … the Third and Last, Including the English Valiant Attempts in Searching Almost all the Corners of the Vaste and New World of America … Whereunto is Added the Last Most Renowned English Navigation Round About the Whole Globe of the Earth. The sketch of Assan Aga AKA Samson Rowlie / Hassan Agha Rowlie of Bristow merchant, taken in the Swalow.” Within its pages, a whole history of adventure, captivity, and transformation of a young man from Bristol, Samson Rowlie, son of Francis Rowlie, is condensed in a single terse headnote: “To Assan Aga, Eunuch & Treasurer to Hassan Bassa king of Alger, which Assan Aga was the sonne of Fran. But thirteen years after Harborne wrote his letter, an English book would preserve at least a trace of who he was and who he used to be. #6815 ortelius fullHe is only seen again, looking back at the viewer in full Turkish costume, in a chance portrait made two years later (ca. Neither do we know what happened to Assan Aga, the recipient of that letter. We do not know whether the prisoners received their freedom. In return, he would be assured of the favour of Elizabeth I and the gratitude of Harborne and his countrymen, “wherby both my selfe & others in that place having found you in all good offices faithfully affectionated, may in like case performe the like towards you, when & where you may have occasion to use me”. #6815 ortelius freeReferring to the Biblical story of Joseph and his brothers in Egypt, “I trust you be ordained another Joseph”, he writes, “to folow his example in true pietie, in such sort that notwithstading your body be subject to Turkish thraldom, yet your vertuous mind free fro those vices”. His letter was addressed instead to the Beglerbeg’s Eunuch and Treasurer, Assan Aga, and he wrote as one Englishman to another. Harborne’s efforts to free the English prisoners had already made him deeply unpopular with the Beglerbeg, but Harborne was not writing to him. The person who would decide the fate of the prisoners was Uluç Ali Pasha, the Ottoman governor (or Beglerbeg of Algiers), himself a European Christian renegade, a Calabrian who had risen from the rank of an Ottoman oar slave to become the hero of the Battle of Lepanto and the Ottoman High Admiral. It was a tricky matter that he was trying to negotiate - the release of a few Englishmen taken prisoner by the Ottomans. In June 1586, William Harborne, the first English ambassador to the Ottoman court at Istanbul, wrote a letter. As well as the escapades of famed names such as Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh, Nandini Das looks at how the book preserves many stories of lesser known figures that surely would have been otherwise lost. The Principle Navigations, Richard Hakluyt’s great championing of Elizabethan colonial exploration, remains one of the most important collections of English travel writing ever published. #Tad cooper freeGareth refuses and sets them all free but Sid, but before the new king can retaliate he is stabbed in the back and Madalena puts Gareth on the throne of Valencia beside her. Richard's brother orders the captives executed. Richard is knocked off the throne when his older brother, Kingsley, shows up and claims it, and everyone finds themselves locked in the dungeon together. They participate in a joust, visit Sid's hometown, are captured by shipwrecked pirates, and make a stop with a band of singing monks before finally being captured by Richard and Gareth as they try to infiltrate the castle to rescue Madalena, who, it turns out, doesn't want or need to be rescued as Isabella had told the group. The episodes chronicle Galavant's journeys (and the twists and turns that go along with them) through musical numbers composed and written by Menken and Slater. Meanwhile, the malevolent but weak-willed Richard tries to win over the scheming Madalena and seeks help from his brawny henchman, Gareth, and his chef, Vincenzo. Galavant is assisted by his faithful squire, Sid, and the lovely Princess Isabella, whose kingdom of Valencia has been conquered by Richard. Galavant is a dashing knight, down on his luck, determined to reclaim his reputation and his "happily ever after" by going after the evil King Richard, who ruined it the moment he kidnapped the love of Galavant's life, Madalena, who then decided to stay with Richard for his money and power. #Tad cooper seriesOn May 12, 2016, the series was canceled after two seasons. The series was renewed for a second season of ten episodes on May 7, 2015, which premiered on January 3, 2016, following the same airing scheme as the first season. The series premiered on January 4, 2015, with its first season consisting of eight episodes which aired over four weeks. In an interview about the show, actress Mallory Jansen described Galavant as, "the bastard child of Monty Python and The Princess Bride." Fogelman, Menken and Slater also serve as executive producers alongside Chris Koch, Kat Likkel and John Hoberg. Galavant is an American musical fantasy comedy television series, created and written by Dan Fogelman, with music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater. He said: "I was so embarrassed about coming home looking about 100 because I couldn't walk, and I have these metal rods in my back and these screws … I said, 'Lauren, I just don't know how to explain it to. SIMON COWELL ACCIDENT TVBut the TV personality said the hardest part of his recovery was coming home to his 7-year-old son Eric after the accident. "I was thinking, 'I've got to get back into the house because I can't lie there'… and made myself kind of get carried into my bedroom, which is right there at the beginning of the house, and I'm lying there and I'm kind of passing out… It was surreal," he said.Īccording to sources who spoke to People, Cowell was said to be "walking around" just two days after the surgery. He admitted to the publication that he was “a bit of a nutter” after narrowly avoiding a fatal injury after not wearing a helmet during his second crash. Apart from the broken arm, Cowell also suffered facial cuts and a suspected concussion during the accident, in which he fell onto the hard ground while riding his bike at 20 mph.Cowell on an early season of "American Idol."Ĭowell, 61, continued to say that he knew he wasn't supposed to move after the accident, but he decided he could not lie down and wait. It does come with the territory,” he said. “I’m not getting off it! I always say that if you’re going to ride a bike then you’re going to fall off it at some point. I have a lot of people to thank for my recovery.”Ĭowell also told MailOnline that his son (who he shares with fiancée Lauren Silverman) is concerned about his bike-riding habits following his accidents, but he is taking time off them (not forever, however) and using more careful approaches to his rides. I know I was lucky to survive my back surgery. I was able to walk a lot and strengthen my legs. If there was one good thing about lockdown, it was that it gave me the time to heal because I wasn’t working on a TV show. Just when I though the bones had healed, I went with Eric to a funfair and tried to kick a football and it was agony.”Ī post shared by Simon Cowell continued, “But at least now I can actually play football with Eric. I had a lot of long-term nerve damage as well. Cowell detailed more about his accident with Ok! Magazine “I didn’t talk about it much at the time. The iconic American Idol judge fell off his bike in another incident on January 27 of this year, near his West London home where he broke his arm, lost a tooth and again headed to the hospital.Īccording to The Daily Mail, Cowell, father to 8-year-old son, Eric, said that he “kept a lot back” at the time of the second incident, didn’t want to talk about what happened, and explained that what he truly endured was “much worse” than the public might have thought. Almost a year later, Cowell was spotted riding an e-bike in May 2021. After this, he required a 6-hour surgery for his injuries. The X Factor creator, 62, revealed that he suffered “long-term nerve damage” as a result of his two collisions and is now “very careful” with the physical activities he chooses.īack in August 2020, Cowell fell off a bike in Malibu and broke his back in 3 different areas. Simon Cowell is opening up about his second electrical bike (e-bike) accident and the toll it took on his physical and mental health. Because of this, it can sometimes be difficult for the average citizen to gain insight into the plight of the Palestinians, since most coverage favors the Israelis. Through the perspectives of five different people (each using a broken camera), a different aspect of the Palestine/Israel conflict is highlighted. Some examples include Pinochet’s coup in Chile in 1973, the Falklands War in 1982, the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989, the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Asian Financial crisis in 1997 and Hurricane Mitch in 1998. It reveals how drastically America’s economy improves after developing nations and non-democratic nations face hardship. #GREED CORP TRAILER FREE#Based on the 2007 book by Naomi Klein, this documentary, through real newsreel footage and interviews, attempts to affirm the theory that America’s free market economy feeds on natural disasters, war, and terror to establish American dominance. Shock Doctrine investigates the long-running but ever-expanding practice of “disaster capitalism”. Available to watch on Amazon Prime.ĭirected by Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross Similar to Dark Money, this film does not have a happy ending, but instead acts as a battle cry for the fight against corporate crime. This is not an economic documentary, but one of true crime. Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room reveals a level of corporate greed that makes the Koch Brothers look like socialist saints. Gibney’s film explains the scandal, and attempts to decipher how what was essentially a ponzi scheme became the seventh largest corporation in America and one of the five largest audit and accountancy partnerships in the world. One of the biggest business scandals in American history was the Enron Scandal. While it doesn’t exactly have a happy ending, it does leave you with seeds of hope for the future of our democracy. Dark Money introduces players from both sides of the fight. The film examines the origin and consequences of Citizens United, a law granting personhood to corporations. This allows them to fund political campaigns to elect whichever (always Republican) candidate that will act in their best interest. All are riveting political thrillers, but what makes Dark Money stand out is the rather disconcerting fact that it is completely true. V for Vendetta, The Man Who Knew Too Much and Dark Money. Available to watch on Youtube and Amazon Prime. Taking place in the beginning of time to the distant future, and stemming across the West African Delta region to the heart of the Amazon rainforest, and from Washington to Shanghai, Crude Impact is a disturbing and grotesque examination into the business of ethical and environmental depletion. It connects the inherent suffering of humans to the profitable suffering of the environment, particularly stemming from the fossil fuel industry. Available to watch on Youtube.Ĭrude Impact acts almost as a precursor to the blockbuster Mad Max films, serving as an explanation for why there is no oil and how the earth has turned to violent chaos as a result. This is particularly important now, considering that trump overwhelmingly won the vote of the white, uneducated, working class. The film shows how the wealthy Republican party entraps working class people to do their own bidding, while actively working against their best interests. Thirty-thousand people were now out of work. Roger and Me follows Moore as he attempts to track down the CEO of General Motors, who had just spontaneously shut down all of the auto plants in Moore’s hometown of Flint, Michigan. It is best known for the feature that catapulted Moore into the role of poster child for making anti-war, anti-corporate, and altogether stick-it-to-the-man documentaries. Roger and Me marks the debut film of Michael Moore. The following films expose the dark depths of some of ERI’s most important missions corporate accountability, human rights, and environmental justice. Filmmaker SImon Kilmurry writes that “ Documentary film is essential to a healthy and democratic society - that is why it is feared by autocrats.” Documentarians are often arrested, and even killed just for doing their job. In an era of fake news, doctored video and a government-sanctioned war on reality, documentaries are truly more important than ever.

Saul composed the music for Soulless II directly in Goattracker, with a keyboard on hand for “noodling around on” and working out chords for the wave table values. “Mikkel, I think, has a much lighter touch than I do and is better when it comes to subtle, haunting and meandering tunes, while my music tends to be a lot more regimented and structured and I think a little more aggressive.” “I was inspired by Mikkel’s original Soulless music for the loading tune and then moved away from that fairly quickly into something a little darker (I hope) so that there would be a little transition but it would also be very clear that Soulless II was a very different game with a very different feel,” says Saul. Mikkel’s music in turn inspired Saul Cross, who composed the soundtrack for this year’s upcoming sequel to Soulless, and which is being released as part of the double vinyl package from Chiptune Records. “But in general, Martin Galway is my all-time favourite SID-musician,” Hastrup reveals. Listening to the Soulless soundtrack today, Mikkel can hear a bit of game composers Matt Gray and Tim Follin in the arrangement style. “The rest of the music was composed similarly, but the intro music is actually something I wrote about 10 years earlier, and not for the SID-chip, and also never used for anything until this game came along.” It could probably have been even longer to fit the game, but I ran out of ideas. “I knew it would be music that had to loop, so I tried to make the in-game music pretty lengthy. “The in-game music (the main track) was something I worked out on a synthesizer over a longer period of time, so it was very much a cut-and-paste of various recordings I’d made until I had appealing melodies and musical parts that fitted together, then composing them in a tracker for the SID-chip. Trevor wanted something in a medieval/atmospheric style and he mentioned Master of Magic by Rob Hubbard as a reference. “Back in the fall of 2011, I started working with Trevor and Georg (and) we communicated through text files in a shared Dropbox folder, if you can believe it. The music is by Mikkel Hastrup, who is “very humbled” by the fact that there is an audience who would love to hear it on vinyl. The intense, hypnotic tones of the first Soulless game soundtrack a beast in search of its stolen soul within an esoteric temple. “The environments on the album art are based on actual game environments, the cover and back being the final stage of Soulless II and the gatefold art being the temple from Soulless.” “I designed and did the artwork for the actual games so I knew exactly how the characters should look,” Trevor explains. He also likes to design retro games, including Soulless and its brand new sequel Soulless II: Armour Of Gods, to be released this year by Psytronik. The release package comes with new artwork by Trevor, an artist in the sci-fi, fantasy and horror realms. Listening to this music really catapults you into a different world, and that’s what good music does in my opinion: it makes you forget you’re actually listening to it!” “The Soulless OST has this genuine 8-bit vibe with ’80s and even new wave influences, which I love a lot. We love vinyl records and 8-bit music, so why not combine both?” “We released the soundtrack for the game Hessian last year, and now aim to release the Soulless soundtrack on double vinyl and CD. “With Chiptune Records, we aim to release music from C64 games released by Psytronik Software,” says label owner and synthwave musician Koen De Brabander.
